Self-nomination

Students may be asked to choose whether they undertake a gifted program, or receive enrichment or extension work. This can occur formally where students choose to commit to an extra-curricular program, or informally on a day-by-day basis where students choose whether or not to participate in more difficult work on that day.

Advantages

  • Students who choose to partake will be motivated to do so.
  • Promotes autonomy and self-management.

Disadvantages

  • Students may be reluctant to self-nominate due to a lack of acceptance from peers.
  • Mäori students may particularly be reluctant to self-nominate, due to the Mäori concept of whakama, which can be loosely translated as excessive modesty.
  • Some students may not be aware of their own strengths, as many gifted students can be quite harsh on themselves.
